Double Breasted Jacket
The double-breasted jacket has wide overlapping front lapels, with two rows of buttons. One row of buttons is functional and used for fastening; the other row is decorative only. An inner button, called a 'jigger', may be used to fasten the lapels securely from the inside for a neater look. At the back, the jacket looks best with either a double vent or no vent at all.
Typically, there are two styles of double-breasted jackets for men. One is called six-on-two (6x2), which means there are six buttons with two buttons used for fastening. This jacket is most flattering on tall or medium built men. The other style is called the Kent, which commonly has four buttons, with one button used for fastening. This jacket is better suited for short or stout men.
Today the double-breasted jacket is used primarily for men's formal attire. For the most classic look, the jacket should be worn buttoned, with a tie or necktie, and a pocket handkerchief.
For a woman, the double-breasted jacket is more versatile. Women fashion designers have been innovative in creating many trendy styles with feminine detailing. The jackets can be casual or dressy; they are even fashionably worn unbutton.
